FONTLOG for Vigil
---------------------------------------------------------------------

This file provides information on the Vigil font software. It should be
distributed along with the Vigil fonts and any derivative works, as the SIL
Open Font License FAQ recommends.

Basic Font Information
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Vigil is a softened geometric grotesk: geometric construction with the corners
and stroke ends rounded on a constant 22-unit radius, so it reads as a clean
sans at 16px and shows its softness at display sizes. Eight weights from
ExtraLight to Black with matching italics, an outline style, and a 200-900
variable axis in both romans and italics. Latin Extended coverage: Western and
Central European, including Polish, Czech and Turkish.

Vigil is a derivative of Figtree by Erik Kennedy, reproportioned and modified
as recorded below. Figtree's own history is kept in its repository at
https://github.com/erikdkennedy/figtree and is not reproduced here.

Vigil is published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. Figtree declares no
Reserved Font Name, so the rename to Vigil is permitted outright; the licence
requires only that Figtree's copyright notice and the licence travel with every
copy, which they do, in OFL.txt, in the copyright field of every font file, and
in the readme inside the download.

ChangeLog
---------------------------------------------------------------------
(Most recent first.)

1.005 (25 September 2026, Joaquin Keno Vigil)
- The capital I goes back to Figtree's plain stem. The 1.003 nub kept 45% of
the serif's reach at every weight, but the serif's bar thickens from 21 to
149 units across the axis while its reach barely moves, so at Black the nub
was 52 units wide and 149 tall and read as a notch cut into the stem rather
than a crossbar. I, Iacute, Idieresis, the five composited accented forms
and IJ are restored from 1.002 exactly, outlines, advances and variations.
- The default I and l are once again the same shape at different widths, as
in Figtree. ss02 is the way to tell them apart: it gives the full-serif I and
the tailed l together. Nothing else changed.

1.004 (18 September 2026, Joaquin Keno Vigil)
- The tail comes back off the lowercase l, and ss02 again yields the tailed
form, which is the arrangement Figtree ships and the one Vigil had at 1.000.
The tail worked, but it fell on the most frequent lowercase letter in English
and its curve is the J's curve mirrored, so it read as a reversed J wherever
nothing followed it. The capital I now carries the distinction instead.
- The kerning added in 1.002 moves with the tail onto the ss02 forms, since a
plain l needs none of it.

1.003 (18 September 2026, Joaquin Keno Vigil)
- The capital I takes a short nub crossbar, built from the face's own serifed
I with the overhang compressed to 45% of its reach, so it inherits that
form's bar thickness, end treatment and scaling across the weight axis.
Iacute and Idieresis are rebuilt with it; the five composited accented forms
and IJ follow. The full-serif I remains on ss02, as before.
- Measured as ink differing from the plain form at 16px, the nub reads at 3.5
pixels against the tail's 3.4, so it does the same work on a rarer letter.

1.002 (17 September 2026, Joaquin Keno Vigil)
- The tailed l is spaced. It shipped in 1.001 carrying Figtree's advance for
that glyph, which left it no right sidebearing at all and a negative one from
SemiBold up, so it crowded whatever followed. The bearing is set to 0.35 of
the one n carries and kerning gives space back before the period, comma,
colon, semicolon, x and z, which are the glyphs whose ink meets the tail on
the baseline. Kerns vary down the weight axis, as the rest of the font's do.
- No letterform changed. The italics were already correct and were not touched.

1.001 (16 September 2026, Joaquin Keno Vigil)
- The lowercase l takes a tail by default, using Figtree's own l.ss02 drawing,
so that l and I read apart. Stylistic set 2 is reversed and yields the plain
  l. The Polish l with stroke and the accented forms follow.

1.000 (September 2026, Joaquin Keno Vigil)
- First release. Derived from Figtree: reproportioned, respaced, renamed, with
the outline style and the variable axes built for this family.
